A MILLION SMOCKS - Developed by Art Teachers Rachelle Omenson & Erika Gehringer
A Million Smocks was created out of a tragedy in our nation. Hurricane Katrina displaced tens of thousands of people and the bulk of those men, women, and children were bussed into the Houston Astrodome in Texas. Rachelle Omenson, an art teacher, flew to Houston to create a temporary space where the children could make art and express themselves during such a crisis. The whole story can be found here.
The mission of A Million Smocks is to provide free art supplies and/or free art instruction to those individuals and organizations who can benefit from artistic expression.
Our goal is to have a million art teachers and volunteers from around the country wearing their million smocks and dedicating their energy to helping people enjoy the benefits of art.

Currently we are collecting T-shirts and creating Superhero capes and bringing them to some of the shelters and humanitarian respites in the Texas border regions. Children everywhere deserve to feel like heroes and we can make that happen with some t-shirts, felt and a hot glue gun.
